Discussion Post: Goodreads vs. Twitter

Goodreads....that fantastic site that lets you set goals every year on how many books to read, recommends you books, and talk to other amazing book lovers. The only question is do you really use the site?

I used to be an avid goodreads user, not so much anymore. I'm still reading just as much as I used to but for some reason lately I'm not remembering to update my currently reading list or look at what books Goodreads has recommended me. I'd like to blame it on the lack of time I have with school, work, and reading itself but I'm not quite sure.
I recently noticed that the more I go on Twitter, the less I go on Goodreads. It's probably because they virtually serve the same purpose for me. I get recommendations from people on Twitter all the time or I'll be scrolling down my Twitter feed and I'll see so many tweets about this one book that I know it's popular. Goodreads was my main source of book recommendations before I got a Twitter but its slowly been phased out.

Twitter also allows for easier interactions with others. I  communicate lot more with people on Twitter because on Goodreads once you comment on a status you get every comment that was posted on that status even if it has nothing to do with you, and I find that to be really annoying when trying to get rid of those annoying red circles on my apps on my phone (The reason I also hate Facebook). Twitter allows you to only receive the messages and tweets directed towards you so you aren't flipping through hundreds of notifications looking for the ones that actually have to do with you.
The only reason I really use Goodreads anymore is to post reviews and update my "read" shelf every couple of days. I miss my obsession with Goodreads but after all the drama and making my Twitter account it doesn't seem like the best use of my time.

So is it just me or do others feel this way too? Do you think I should make an effort to use Goodreads more?

Who do you prefer: Goodreads or Twitter?

  1. Twitter drives me crazy, but maybe that's just because the whole concept annoys me. I prefer goodreads because I like to keep track of what I've read.

    1. That's pretty much what I use goodreads for, but I don't get recommendations or talk to others on Goodreads. That's what I use Twitter for.

  2. i use both for different purpose. goodreads is more focused, it's for readers only, so i could see what others read and what they think about it while reading. twitter is more abstract for me. i use it to interact with my real life friends, know what happening in real life, and fandoms in general. i've been using twitter less and less nowadays, because i just don't follow many bookish people there, and none of my friends use it anymore :D

    1. I talk to my friends irl on Twitter but I get a lot of book recommendations and the like on Twitter. Goodreads format is getting kind of outdated which is annoying. As a tech geek, I feel as if they need to be doing more updating.
