Review: Fire & Flood by Victoria Scott

Fire & Flood (Fire & Flood, #1)Author: Victoria Scott
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Number of Pages: 320

Synopsis:
"Tella Holloway is losing it. Her brother is sick, and when a dozen doctors can't determine what's wrong, her parents decide to move to Montana for the fresh air. She's lost her friends, her parents are driving her crazy, her brother is dying—and she's helpless to change anything.
Until she receives mysterious instructions on how to become a Contender in the Brimstone Bleed. It's an epic race across jungle, desert, ocean, and mountain that could win her the prize she desperately desires: the Cure for her brother's illness. But all the Contenders are after the Cure for people they love, and there's no guarantee that Tella (or any of them) will survive the race.
The jungle is terrifying, the clock is ticking, and Tella knows she can't trust the allies she makes. And one big question emerges: Why have so many fallen sick in the first place?"
One of the best thrillers I've read, this is one book that ANY YA reader will enjoy no matter their favorite genre.

Fire & Flood blew my mind. I absolutely have fallen in love with this book and I really am just psyched for the sequel to come out. The characters were amazing, the plot was phenomenal, and this is flat out one of the best books of 2014 I have read so far!

When I first recieved this book and read the synopsis I was hit by how much it seemed like the Hunger Games, and I'm a fan-not a big one but I am a fan. This is like The Hunger Games, fans of the series will love this book, but something about Fire & Flood makes it so much better than Collin's series. Fire & Flood is a better Hunger Games and it catches your attention the minute you read the first sentence,
"If my hair gets any frizzier, I'll shave it to the scalp."
That first sentence really just caught my attention and reminded me of my own hair when I've been outside in the summer for a long period of time. This book just had some of the wittiest lines and some of the most capturing scenes ever. I finished this book in a solid day, I was hooked to this book. Victoria Scott wrote this amazing book and I just want more

The characters in this book are simply amazing. Tella is such a driven character and Scott has made her so life like when it comes to her emotions. Tella wants to give up at times, she feel frustrated, sad, hopeful, scared etc. Her feelings just go through this roller coaster just like a normal human-beings would if they were in the Brimstone Bleed.

Guy is this character in the book that really just changes out you look at the Brimstone Bleed. Throughout this book we see this competition as this amazing things that just helps sick people but by the end we just see it in a whole different light that leaves us shocked. Guy is also this amazing guy *giggles* that just is full of kindness but he also stays strong and keeps his eye on the goal.

This whole book is full of amazing scenes that go through all the obstacles that the contestants have to face. This book is full of awesomesauce and I just love it so much. This is the first book by Victoria Scott that I have read and I am dying to read her Dante Walker series, but my B&N doesn't carry it :( . Anyways I HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY suggest you read this series and I have heard other amazing things from other bloggers as well.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars!!!

Birthday Bash Day 3: Kate Karyus Quinn

Hey everybody! Welcome to Day 3 of my bookish birthday bash! If you don't know I turned 16 on February 20th and it was a big day for me.

Today I'd like to give a very warm welcome to Kate Karyus Quinn!

Kate Karyus Quinn
Kate is a great author who debuted in 2013 with Another Little Piece and is soon releasing (Don't You) Forget About Me (June 2014).

Interview
1. Tell us a little about you and your books!
My first YA book, ANOTHER LITTLE PIECE, came out last year from HarperTeen. It is about a girl who is last seen screaming and covered in blood – and then she disappears. A year later she’s found with no memory of who she is or where she’s been. The only thing she does know is that she feels like someone or something else.

My second book is (DON’T YOU) FORGET ABOUT ME and it will be out on June 10th, 2014 again from HarperTeen. It is about a magical town called Gardnerville where no one gets sick and almost no one ever dies. Except there is a price to be paid for this and the teenagers of the town pay it every four years. The story centers around Skylar who lost her sister Piper during the last fourth year.

As for me I am a mom of two kids who spends most of my time looking for recipes, writing, or looking forward to my next nap.

2. Where do you get inspiration for your books?
Everywhere! Seriously, I am a voracious reader of not just fiction, but newspapers, magazines, and really whatever I can get my hands on.

3. What is your favorite thing about writing? Something you hate?
My favorite thing is when the words are flowing and the story starts to really come together. My least favorite thing is the opposite of that – when the right words elude me and the whole story feels like a hot mess.

4. If you could have any wish granted when it comes to your writing what would it be?
To be an Oprah’s book club pick? Really, I want to get my books into as many readers’ hands as possible and something like getting picked by Oprah can give a book a lot of visibility.

5. Who is your favorite male character from a book that is not yours?
Well I just read Winger and he was an awesome male character.

Now on to some quick questions!

6. Favorite thing to do when you’re not writing?
Read or sleep or watch TV.

7. Love or Lust?
Love

8. Favorite book?
No, sorry. It’s impossible to pick one.

9. Favorite singer/band?
I am pretty crazy about Lorde right now and also have been playing the Inside Llewyn Davis soundtrack on repeat.

10. Favorite TV Show/Movie?
Lately I’ve really been enjoying The Mindy Project and Agents of Shields. I am also a huge Mad Men fan.

Birthday Bash Day 2: Elizabeth Reyes

Hey everybody! Welcome to Day 2 of my bookish birthday bash! If you don't know I turn 16 on February 20th and it's a big day for me.

Today I'd like to give a very warm welcome to Elizabeth Reyes!
Elizabeth Reyes
Elizabeth is an amazing author who is mostly self-published but will have her first traditionally published book, Desert Heat, out in May! Some of her books are The Moreno Brother series, 5th Street series, her Fate series, and Desert Heat (May 2014).
Interview

Tell us a little about you and your books!

Alpha males and family. I love writing about a group of friends, family and how  protective they are for each other. Each one of my stories is completely different but in each you'll always find the underlying  storyline of fierce protectiveness and lots of love any loyalty to one another. Another thing I firmly believe is that everything happens for a reason and this also is often found in my stories like in my series Fate. But you can also find the theme in my other stories.
How do you feel going from being self-published to traditional publishing?
Excited! The people over at Simon & Schuster/Atria  have been wonderful walking me through this new process for me. I was a little nervous at first but so far everything has gone smoothly and I'm so looking forward to the release.
What is your favorite thing about writing?
Creating the story. My muse comes out with the most unexpected things sometimes that even catch me by surprise. So it's very excited as the story comes together and the characters seem to write their own stories.
Something you hate?
I wouldn't say hate but I'm very emotional when it comes to my characters and I get sad sometimes even cry when I finish a series. =(
If you could have any wish granted when it comes to your writing what would it be?
That I could write faster. I have SO many stories dying to be written in my head. I wish I could get them all down faster.
Who is your favorite male character from a book that is not yours?
Oh Wow. Too many. Simon from Lori Foster's Simon Says, Lucas from Tammara Webbers Easy and Jamie McGuire's Travis Maddox just to name a few.

Now on to some quick questions!

Favorite thing to do when you’re not writing?
Reading, spending time with my hubby and kids.
Love or Lust?
Love... I tried writing lust with Abel. It never works out. ;)
Favorite book?
No way can I narrow it down to one but I love anything by Lori Foster, Jamie McGuire, Tammara Webber, Tina Reber, Abbi Glines, Tracey Garvis-Graves  and a few other genres James Patterson, Jeffery Deaver and Anne Rule.
Favorite singer/band?
Bruno Mars
Favorite TV Show/Movie?
Modern Family and A Big Bang Theory

Birthday Bash Day 1: Angie Stanton

Hey everybody! Welcome to Day 1 of my bookish birthday bash! If you don't know I turn 16 on February 20th and it's a big day for me. I am officially an adult in the eyes of the law, so if I do something wrong I get to hit the big leagues of court. (Fun, I know). Each day of this week I will be having a new author visit with an interview or guest post.

I'd like to give a very warm welcome to Angie Stanton!
Angie Stanton
Angie is the author of many books, traditionally published and self-published! Some of her books include Rock and a Hard Place, Snowed Over, and Royally Lost (May 2014).

Interview
LB: Tell us a little about you and your books!

AS: I grew up living out in the country surrounded by farm fields. I was 7 miles from town and 1 mile from my nearest friend, so I did a lot of daydreaming. I never planned on writing, and honestly, I wasn’t that interested in English, but I was an avid reader. As an adult, the daydreaming never went away and I eventually decided to try to write the story in my head into a novel. That book is Love ‘em or Leave ‘em.
The next books I wrote were Young Adult books. Rock and a Hard Place and Snapshot are in stores now. They are coming of age, roller coaster tales of falling love while dealing with the problems and drama of the adults around them. Readers tell me they laugh, cry, and can’t put the book down. One reader emailed to say that she’d read one of my books 23 times!

LB: How do you feel going from being self-published to traditional publishing?

AS: My first book was actually traditionally published, but by a smaller house that sold primarily to libraries and schools. However, my next four books were all self published. I self-published Rock and a Hard Place because no agents or editors would look at it. After the amount of rejection I received, I figured the book would never see the light of day unless I self-published, and I am so glad I did! That book took off and readers went crazy over it.
Three books later, both an agent and editor came knocking, and I said yes. I am proud to say that two of those self-published books are now published by HarperTeen with two more books on the way. The next book release will be Royally Lost this May.
What I love most about being traditionally published is that my books are finding a whole new audience. Young Adult books are showing up in libraries and schools all over the country. I absolutely love that!

LB: What is your favorite thing about writing? Something you hate?

AS: My favorite thing about writing is the freedom. No more getting dressed up for work and having to do the 9 to 5 thing. I try to write every day, Monday through Friday, but it isn't at a set time.
Something I hate about writing is that it isn't just the writing. More than half my time is spent on the business side of things. There’s the whole social media and promotion thing, but also all the book work, contracts, and business emails.

LB: If you could have any wish granted when it comes to your writing what would it be?

AS: For everyone to discover my books and love them.

LB: Who is your favorite male character from a book that is not yours?

AS:Nothing jumps to my mind. Now if you said character in a movie, I’d say Noah, played by Ryan Gosling, in the Notebook. And that’s all I’ll say about that.

Now on to some quick questions!

LB: Favorite thing to do when you’re not writing?

AS: During winter, like now, I love to curl up in front of the fire and watch a great movie. In the summer, I love to hang with friends at outdoor restaurants.

LB: Love or Lust?

AS: It’s definitely about the love for me.

LB: Favorite book?

AS: That’s a tough one, there are so many I love, but The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger is awesome!

LB: Favorite singer/band?

AS: At this exact moment, I’d say Fun. The lead singer is amazing.

LB: Favorite TV Show/Movie?

AS: This is so embarrassing to admit, but it’s the truth. I love Dancing with the Stars and I’ll tell you why. They take some “star” who is totally out of their element, usually he or she is super good looking and fun, and pair them with an even better looking pro dancer. Throughout the show we get to watch their struggles as they slowly learn the art of dance and bond with their partners. Some of it is playful, and some of the dances are so dang hot! All that intensity is so much fun to watch and some times the pairs fall for each other. It’s a little bit like a romance novel.

And, not that you asked, but I adore Irish dance pro Tristan McManus. He has an awesome accent, really good looking, incredibly funny and kind, and his dancing is out of this world.

Love-A-Thon Interview Swap with Kristen from The Book Monsters

Book Blogger Love-A-Thon 2014
So I had the great opportunity to interview a great blogger, Kristen, The Book Monsters. If you haven't heard of their blog then definitely click on the banner below to go to their site!

The Book Monsters

Tell us a little about you and your blog!
I'm Kristen, a 29 year old elementary school librarian. I have a wonderful husband who also loves to read, but only "adult" books, mostly fantasy and nonfiction, and gives me grief when I read sappy books that make me cry. I started blogging about 4.5 years ago after I saw book blogs cropping up on Goodreads. About 2 years in, I decided to join up with Kate, another blogger who I had been talking to online pretty much the whole two years and we started our new blog The Book Monsters. It's been awesome to have some support and someone awesome to talk to about books and blogging and we meld well together. Our tastes are fairly similar but also very different at times. We mainly read fantasy and science fiction, although I've been more into Middle Grade level books lately, whereas Kate generally just reads Young Adult books. I also read a lot of graphic novels and sometimes manga and review those as well.

What is your favorite thing about reading/blogging?
I love the escapism of reading, I'll be honest. I have my crappy weeks at work just like everyone else and reading keeps me imaginative and open as well as lets me escape into a different world. There's nothing like a great book to make you realize your problems could be much worse... like fighting a battle during the endtimes or facing off vicious zombies. Blogging is a great outlet and has introduced me to so many new authors and websites, it's incredible. I wish I could read more blogs as I learn so much from other readers. I love the community of blogging as well and it's expanded my use and knowledge of social media, which is so helpful in my job.

Are there any blogging regrets you have?
I wish I had time to write better reviews. I admit to writing short reviews, editing them just barely and then just pushing them out there. They aren't by any way the worst writing out there, but definitely not the best either. I also feel like sometimes I don't get as much reading done because I spend so much time working on my blog or getting distracted by Twitter.

If you could have a conversation with any author, living or dead, who would it be?
Hans Christian Anderson. I'm so enthralled with fairy tales, I would have love to have met and chatted with him.

What advice would you give to newbie bloggers/want to be bloggers?
Don't stress out and blog because you love it, not for some other reason. I know that stats, numbers, etc get into the heads of new bloggers, but it takes time to build an audience. If you keep consistent and show your passion, you'll get followers. I hate when I hear that book bloggers start blogging for freebies, it's just silly. The library is free... just in case we all forgot. Also, a couple comments goes a long way. I notice when I comment more, the more comments my blog gets. It doesn't matter how long you've been around, if you stick with it, it pays off in so many different ways. I still have author emails from years ago that saw my review of their book and sent a love note. It's the little things that make blogging worth it.

I'd really like to thank Kristen for answering my questions and interviewing me as well! Go check out her blog for her interview with me and definitely go follow her!

Mini Review: Song of the Fireflies by J.A. Redmerski

Song of the FirefliesAuthor: J.A. Redmerski
Publisher: Forever
Number of Pages: 464

Synopsis:
"Since they were kids, Elias Kline and Brayelle Bates have been inseparable. When Bray moves to South Carolina, separating the two for the first time, they both at last realize that their innocent childhood friendship has developed into something much more. So when Bray finally returns to Georgia—and to Elias—things between them couldn’t be more perfect…until one fateful night changes everything.
Desperate not to go to prison for a terrible accident, Elias and Bray decide to run. As they try to make the most of their freedom, the two find themselves relying on a rebellious group of people who tempt the duo into a wild and daring new life. But they can’t run from their troubles forever.
As the consequences of their past catch up to them, the couple must finally face reality. Even if they can make it through the unimaginable, Elias knows the truth about Bray’s painful history, and in the end he may not be able to save Bray from herself…"
This is going to be a short review because I didn't even finish this book. Don't get me wrong! I'm a huge fan of J.A. and this book was really good but this entire issue in this book was one that I was not comfortable reading about. I couldn't get through it because of that, and I just ended up feeling really sick to my stomach.

I know that most people don't mind this kind of this but this isn't a mystery or thriller where I could work with this kind of situation. I'm not saying what that situation is in this book but it is one that could land these characters in prison. Overall it made me very uncomfortable and therefore I was unable to finish this book.

Maybe a few years from now I will be able to pick it up again with no problem and finish it but at the moment I really can't. I really hope all of you understand. If you are okay with reading this kind of stuff then I would say go read it and tell me what you think about it! It just isn't for me.

I am looking forward to reading more of J.A.'s other books and am not going to let this deter me from reading more of her work. Since I didn't finish this I am not going to give this a rating to be fair.

Blog Tour + Giveaway: Torn by Annie Brewer

Torn CoverAuthor: Annie Brewer
Publisher: Self-Published
Number of Pages: 229

Synopsis:

"Skylar McKenzie is a serious artist with a plan. She'll graduate high school, travel around Europe, then leave her life in Texas and move to New York. She'll also leave her feelings for the boy she's known her whole life, behind and move on. Or so she hopes.
Jackson Cruz is ready for a future as a star quarterback once he graduates high school. It's the path he's been leading for years now. But when his cheerleader girlfriend cheats on him, and a teammate causes a lot of drama, he wonders if this is really the life he's wanted, or if there's something more.
They thought they had it all figured out-their futures. But life doesn't always go as planned. With feelings revealed, their dreams on the line, this is a year for changes, choices, and a love that might or might not overcome all obstacles.
Told in Jackson and Skylar’s POV, this is a story about acceptance, first love, embracing your passions and finding your way, even if it’s not the way you had planned."

If you are looking for a good YA romance then this book is definitely the way to go. It almost falls into the New Adult category so be careful!
This is the second Annie Brewer book that I have read, and it really lived up the expectations that her first book that I read gave me. This book was very well written, had a great plot, and left me wanting more.
The characters in this novel, Skylar and Jackson, are great. They are a bit of the unconventional couple in the way that one of them is extremely popular, the other not so much. That really appealed to me. They both are strong, independent characters that don't get clingy. They make each other feel needed but they don't cling-clingers are a pet peeve of mine.
The plot of this book is simple, yet it is also unique in its own way. Annie Brewer's writing is phenomenal. I'm surprise she isn't a traditionally published author. The book contains almost every feeling in the book...yeah, bad puns. There is happiness, laughter, sadness, grief, anger, and so many other feels that you could list off.
If you are looking for a good YA novel then I highly recommend any of Annie Brewer's novels. They are well written, funny, contain a great plot, and will entertain you for sure.
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars!

*A copy of this book was provided by the author and tour host in exchange for an honest review.

“Jackson?” Skylar’s voice is a breath of air.
“Hmm?”
“Do you think your dad will ever date again?” Her question surprises me, but I’ve wondered that myself. He just makes an excuse that he’s too busy.
I move my head so I can look at her, “I’d like to think he’ll meet someone. But he doesn’t seem interested.”
“My mom’s the same way. She works too much so she claims she’s too tired.” Absentmindedly, I run my fingers up and down her arm. “I think she’s still scared of the idea.” I can relate. “Sometimes I can still hear my dad’s voice, telling me what to do.” Her voice takes on a haunted tone. My hand reaches her fingertips, slowly tracing the length of her newly manicured fingers. “Does the pain ever go away?”
I stop moving; wracking my brain for an answer but come up short. “I don’t know, honestly. We've both lost a parent in a different way. I imagine it’ll get easier. You know why?”
She pivots her body so she’s on her side, facing me. “Why?”
I lean close to her, reach out to touch her face and say, “Because I’m gonna remind you of all the memories I have of him, to make you smile, laugh and feel grateful for the time you got to spend with him. Because that’s what he’d want.” A tear falls from her eye. My head dips slightly, kissing it away.
She wraps her arm around my waist. “That would really help, Jackson. And I’m sure he’s watching us from wherever he is, smiling and happy that his daughter is happy with such an incredible guy.”
It brings a smile to my face and I hope her dad knows how grateful I am to him for bringing such an amazing girl into the world. I’ll do my best to show her how special she is. I can be that guy for her. I will be. I hold her tight against me, massaging her back. Our legs are tangled together. There’s no such thing as perfect; in a perfect world, maybe. But this is anything but a perfect world. However; this night, this moment, is as close to perfect as you can get. I close my eyes, soaking up the warmth emanating from her body, listening to her steady heartbeat.

Annie Brewer leads several lives. At home she's a caring mother of two with a heart of gold. Online, she's a best friend to several and puts a smile on her many fans every time she utters a word. In her own world, she's a dreamer. But the biggest part of her is made of books, books, and more books. It's not a surprise she's turned out to be such a talented young author. Some of her many hobbies include reading, drooling over Ian Somerhalder, Channing Tatum, and Christian Grey (etc.), reading, reviewing, reading, watching Vampire Diaries, reading, and last but not least WRITING like a maniac. She currently resides in Texas, where she dies of heat-strokes every few seconds, with her many books and book-boyfriends, and her two adorable little girls.
